GRP AND STEEL BOND TEST

GRP Aberdeen Ltd has carried out GRP to Steel Bond Tests on several occasions to provide proof loads for deck and accommodation module repair linings. The test pieces are two padeye type assemblies bonded together with a GRP laminate layer of similar makeup to that proposed for the deck and module repairs.

The padeyes are then loaded onto a horizontal test bed and secured using shackles. The test sample is then pulled until a break in the laminate or steel bond occurs.

From the tests carried out so far, the approximate breaking point for the test pieces is between 12 and 12.5 Te. It should be noted that the bond between the actual steel and GRP did not break under load and that is was the intermediate bond within the GRP laminate that failed first. These load tests prove that the bond between the steel and GRP materials is good and able to withstand a load of at least 12Te on the area of the test piece.
